The Danger of Charity Auctions
I have a weakness that I'd like to confess. I generally lose my mind at charity auctions. If you're not familiar with charity auctions, they often work as follows. First, there will be a silent auction, in which you make bids by writing your name or a number that represents you on sheets of paper next to items you'd like to bid on. For example, I often bid on sports tickets to get good seats to a particular game. My wife bids on handmade jewelry. The silent auction will end at a certain time---whoever has bid the most wins. It's the eBay model. The second part of the auction is usually a live auction, in which bigger items are auctioned off with a real live auctioneer. If you want to bid on something, you do so, but in this auction the bid goes on until there's only one man or woman standing.
Go Shopping Via Reverse Auctions
I've found myself in an interesting and illuminating loop lately. In February, I wrote an article offering some money-saving shopping tips. Good enough, right? Well, I quickly heard from some folks who offered me additional advice, especially about where to find great discounts and coupons online. So I then wrote about how to be a smart online shopper. And then -- you guessed it -- I heard from more folks. So here's my next installment, this time focused on ... (drumroll) reverse auctions. With traditional auctions, such as you'll find at eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY), buyers bid on items, driving up the price until no one wants to bid anymore or the time runs out. With reverse auctions, an item's price starts out high, and then dropsĀ -- until someone buys it, ideally. This is similar to the "Dutch auction" concept, which Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) used for its IPO.

Clon bidding for historic win
Another great day in a series of great days for Clonakilty since 1998 comes this Saturday when they fly to Dublin to take on Greystones at the Co. Wicklow venue in the AIB All Ireland League Division Two Semi-Final. Although Stones finished second to Clons third in the group stages they have lost to the West Cork side twice this season already in The Vale when the locals completed the league and cup double over their vaunted visitors 8 0 and 17 10 respectively. Thus Greystones have never won in The Vale drawing their only other game 13 all in 03/04. Clon have conceded only 20 trys in the division - the best record of any club during the 2006 / 07 League season. Thats on the plus side. The debit side makes interesting reading. Clon have lost on both occasions that they played in Dr.Hickey Park.
