Hanover councillor bidding for provincial Liberal nomination
A former Metro Toronto citizen of the year, now a lawyer and municipal councillor in Hanover, wants to run for the Liberals in the next provincial election. Selwyn J. Hicks was raised in Torontos troubled Jane and Finch area. With support from teacher mentors, a Big Brother and youth leadership programs, he attended college, became a Young Liberal and eventually a backroom campaigner and party organizer and policy maker, he said Thursday. I grew up in poverty; six kids from five fathers, living off welfare and not much prospect, Hicks said. Id like to say I worked hard and had a lot of help from various programs and people. My life has been a model example of what can happen when a village comes together to help a child. Ive been very fortunate. Hicks was in Toronto on business and unable to attend a fundraising event in Meaford where Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound Liberals were to hear Thursday night that Hicks is the only candidate for their partys nomination so far.
Tehran seeks bids for 2 new nuclear plants
TEHRAN: Iran yesterday asked for bids to build two new nuclear power stations alongside a still unfinished facility in the south, despite increasing Western pressure over its atomic drive. “Iran is launching two tenders for the construction of two nuclear power stations of between 1,000 and 1,600 megawatts capacity in Bushehr," the director of nuclear energy production, Ahmed Fayaz Bakhsh, told reporters. Horry takes bids on fire rescue study
Horry County Council agreed Tuesday to look into the cost of an efficiency study of its fire rescue services, including management of volunteers and how stations use money. National consultants will bid on the price of the efficiency study, which is expected to cost more than $100,000 and give the county pointers on how to improve its fire department. A recent barrage of complaints from County Council and fire department workers over the treatment of volunteers triggered the consideration of an efficiency study. Some on County Council including the study's sponsor, Kevin Hardee, believe it could help fire rescue save money in its $12 million budget. Others said it could be a waste if the investigation finds the department is already functioning smoothly.
