| Private schools are sold on online auctions
If asked, and she usually is, Donna Bates will buy the $9 roll of wrapping paper to support her niece's school. She'd also drop $850 on four Red Sox tickets for the same worthy cause. From a professional fundraiser's perspective, that's a home run. This spring, Stoneridge Montessori School in Beverly is tapping out-of-state relatives like Bates by putting its annual auction items online. Instead of one night a year, the auction now lasts two weeks and is open to anyone with a credit card and a computer. "In the past, I've always been called upon to baby-sit so mommy and daddy can attend the auction," said Bates, of Stratham, N.H. "I wouldn't have the ability to even bid on them, and that is the wonderful thing." Stoneridge isn't the only North Shore private school using online auctions to capitalize on far-flung alumni, relatives and family friends.
Little red truck sold — again and again
The auctioneers weren't the only ones who showed up night after night at the 40th annual Rotary Radio Auction in Cadiz last week. A 3-inch-tall toy Coca-Cola truck donated by Lou Stea recently was bought and donated back 12 times in the final two nights of the auction. The annual event funds scholarships and grants for students as well as various community projects. People have donated and bought everything from bales of straw to wall hangings. Most items brought at least $100, and many brought much more. Little red Coca-Cola truck, sold: $250. A guest spot on the WKDZ afternoon show "Bill Booth Live Afternoon Drive" sold for $450, a large disappointment to Sheila Harris who originally bid $325 and raised it to $405 before getting outbid. "It's a big deal for me to bid $325," the single mother said.
Flags Hold Silent Auction for Black Jerseys
(PORT HURON, MICH.) - Through the end of the playoffs, the Port Huron Flags will have their game-worn black jerseys available for purchase in a silent auction, with multiple venues for fans to place their bids. Via the website, www.porthuronflags.net, the fan-favorite black jerseys are available to view, listed with current high bids. Interested parties may submit their maximum price online or by calling Lorraine Lixey at (810) 982-FLAG. Additionally, during all home playoff games, the bid lists will be available at the merchandise table. If a jersey's highest maximum internet bid is eclipsed with a live bid during a game, the online list will be appropriately updated at the conclusion of the game. Upon final completion of the post-season, the team will host a Season's End Event, with date and time to be determined.
