Net auctioneer's profit jumps
EBay Inc., the world's largest online auction company, says its first-quarter profit soared 52 per cent after the company raised fees on items for sale and held more auctions outside the United States. Net income climbed to $377.2 million (U.S.), or 27 cents a share, from $248.3 million, or 17 cents, a year earlier, eBay said yesterday. Excluding some expenses, eBay earned 33 cents, three cents more than analysts estimated. Revenue increased 27 per cent to $1.77 billion as a weaker U.S. dollar and demand in western Europe boosted results internationally. Last year, eBay chief executive officer Meg Whitman more than doubled fees for merchants selling goods at fixed prices. A higher percentage of listings are now leading to sales. "They're still the gorilla," said Rachel Wakefield, portfolio manager for Coldstream Capital Management in Portland, Ore.
Japan's Bonds May Drop as Rally in Stocks Cuts Demand for Debt
April 17 (Bloomberg) -- Japanese government bonds may fall for a second day after a report showing gains in U.S. retail sales boosted stocks, cutting demand for debt's fixed payments. Signs that Japan's biggest export market is expanding and the rally in stocks may prompt traders to sell bonds to protect against an increase in yields at an auction of 30-year debt today. Ten-year bond yields yesterday rose the most in almost two weeks. ``In the long-run, bond yields are on a rise,'' said Nobuto Yamazaki, who helps oversee the equivalent of about $5.85 billion in mutual funds at DLIBJ Asset Management Co. in Tokyo. ``We'll probably see a soft landing in the U.S. economy, supported by solid consumer spending and employment.'' The yield on the benchmark 10-year bond dropped half a basis point to 1.69 percent as of 12:31 p.m.
Top tourism awards invite online bids
APPLICATIONS for Scotland's top tourism awards are going online for the first time, making it easier and more environmentally friendly for businesses to enter. The Scottish Thistle Awards, which honour tourism firms, were launched this week at Scotland's biggest travel trade fair, VisitScotland's Expo in Edinburgh. VisitScotland chief executive Phillip Riddle said: "Online applications and judging will help us contribute to making Scotland a greener destination." There are ten categories this year and businesses can enter as many as are applicable to their individual achievements. The closing date for entries is June 7. The finalists will be announced in September, with the overall winners announced at an awards ceremony and dinner in October.
Jeweler M. Fabrikant & Sons seeks approval to auction assets
WASHINGTON (AP) - Diamond wholesaler M. Fabrikant & Sons Inc. has asked a judge for permission to begin enticing bidders for an auction of its assets slated for early May. The request, filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan on Tuesday, solidifies the company's earlier assertions that it may liquidate rather than reorganize. Under the auction plan, privately held M. Fabrikant would sell all its assets, including inventory, accounts and intellectual property. It would then file a liquidation plan with the court. Under the proposed auction rules, any stalking-horse, or lead bidder, would be offered payment for fees and costs worth up to 2 percent of the bid or $200,000 (euro147,000), if the offer is lost at auction. The judge overseeing the jewelry company's bankruptcy case will decide whether to approve the rules at a hearing on April 26. M.
