Cricket bids bye to King Lara

Brian Lara bid an emotional farewell to international cricket on Saturday but admitted he leaves the game with regrets that the West Indies are still a struggling team.

Lara's 17-year career finished on a losing note when his team were beaten by one wicket by England in their final World Cup Super Eights match at a packed Kensington Oval.

Despite a career boasting 11,953 Test and 10,405 one-day runs as well as twin batting records of a Test best 400 not out and 501 not out in first class cricket, he leaves the game with regrets.

"Not all of my dreams have been fulfilled," said captain Lara who made just 18 on Saturday before he was run out in the West Indies total of 300.

"From the very first time I played cricket, my dream was to see the West Indies back on top of the sport.

CDS report: Boots tighter despite bidding war

The cost of insuring the debt of Alliance Boots fell on Friday morning even as a bidding war erupted over the UK health and beauty group.

A consortium led by private equity firm Terra Firma raised its offer for Boots to £11.26 a share, topping an earlier recommended offer from private equity group KKR and Stefano Pessina, the Italian billionaire.

Still, the group's credit default swaps, a kind of insurance against the non-payment of debt, was 5 basis points tighter on the day at a mid-price of 177.5bp, meaning that it costs €177,500 a year to insure €10m of the group's debt against default in a five-year contract.

Market sources say the movement in the CDS market reflects uncertainty about what offer would result in more leverage. Some have raised questions about whether the company's existing bonds may be bought back, making the CDS based on them, in essence, worthless.

‘Priceless moments’ on auction

WOULD you like to have tea with Nelson Mandela, race Ferraris with Shaun Pollock or be serenaded by the internationally-acclaimed Soweto Gospel Choir?

You now stand a chance after several celebrities here and abroad followed Mandelas example and are set to auction off some of their time to raise money for seven South African childrens charities.

Money alone is not usually enough to buy such experiences. Normally anyone hoping to share a moment with Mandela has to contend with his personal assistant, Zelda le Grange, who has a fearsome reputation for seeing off would-be autograph seekers and journalists alike.

But an invitation to tea with Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu, the widow of his late friend and mentor Walter, will go to the highest bidder.

Time with at least 15 different South African celebrities and even more international stars will be on the auctioneers block.

Pope Car Auction Ends Without Sale

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- A 1999 metallic gray Volkswagen Golf believed to once belong to the pope went up for sale on eBay, but the auction ended Saturday without a winner.

For the second time in two years, eBay hosted an auction for a car said to be Pope Benedict XVI's old hatchback. Though bids surpassed $204,000, a reserve price wasn't met.

The car's owner, a Texas-based online casino, GoldenPalace.com, bought the car in 2005 on eBay from a German man. The casino had posted two German automobile registration documents that list "Josef Kardinal Ratzinger" as the vehicle's previous owner.

A spokeswoman for eBay, Catherine Fisher, said she did not know what the seller's minimum price was. A message left with GoldenPalace.com was not immediately returned Saturday evening.
