| Bids opened for landfill expansion
In the discussion and planning stages for years, Defiance County's landfill expansion turned from words to action Thursday when bids were opened for the project. Three bidders offered estimates for the first six-acre expansion on 78 acres due south of the existing landfill. The last area on the current landfill is expected to be filled in December, according to Defiance County Environmental Services director Tim Houck. The lower bidder for general work was Melco Inc., Archbold, at $1,739,756. That firm also had the low alternate bid ($223,620) for such things as topsoil removal, fence construction and surface water diversion. Other bids were received from R.P. Jergens, Vandalia, $1,820,254 for general work, $271,016 for the alternate bid; and Comanco Environmental Corp., Plant City, Fla., $3,199,016 for general work, $343,925 for the alternate bid.
Iran to seek bids for 2 nuclear power plants
Iran said yesterday it would seek bids in the next few days for two new nuclear power plants and will partly run them on fuel produced at home, a process the West fears could lead to material for building atomic bombs. Ahmad Fayazbakhsh, an official at Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, said the power plants would each have capacity for 1,000 to 1,600 MW and would be built at Bushehr, the southwest port city where Russians are building Iran's first atomic plant. The West fears Iran's civilian nuclear program is a smokescreen for atomic weapon ambitions, a charge Teheran denies. A Western diplomat said the tender announcement appeared aimed at justifying Iran's statement last Monday it had expanded work to make atomic fuel in defiance of a UN demand to halt uranium enrichment, a process which can be used to make bombs.

Torana XU-1 will Test Auction Values
Enthusiasts around Australia are eagerly awaiting Shannons Sydney autumn auction on Monday May 7 to see whether Holdens iconic Torana XU-1 has caught the current Muscle Car collectors fever. While values of Bathurst HO Falcons, GTS 327 Monaros and Charger R/T E38 models have recently been soaring, the XU-1 has been the relative sleeper of the highly modified local cars that were built by Holden, Ford and Chrysler to battle at Bathurst in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Now, many believe the Toranas star is about to rise. Based on the sporty GTR model in the updated LJ Torana range, the GTR XU-1 was built as a Bathurst homologation special. Off the production line its 202-cid six cylinder engine produced 190HP (140kW) at 5600 rpm thanks to triple Stromberg carburetors, a revised camshaft and a lightened flywheel.
