York Bids Sailor Farewell

Petty Officer 1st Class Joseph McSween and two soldiers were killed in combat near Kirkuk in northern Iraq. Details of how the three were killed were not disclosed. They were specialists in identifying explosive materials and disarming them.

McSween graduated from York College in 2003. He met his wife there and the pair came to call York home, according to friends. .

Conklin: Council bids farewell to departing members

Tuesday, for the first time in 24 years, a new Madison City Council took an oath of office without an alderperson named Judy Olson.

No new member at the noon swearing-in ceremony at City Hall had black or metallic polish on their pinky nails, as was routinely sported by departing Ald. Ken Golden, aka "The Bear."

And no newcomer displayed the intense passion Austin King put into his well-crafted farewell remarks on behalf of the poor, "the people in our community who often get forgotten."

3 North Hanover farms to be sold at auction

The State Agriculture Development Committee will sell three permanently preserved farms in Burlington County at public auctions in June.

The farms, all in North Hanover, are the 180-acre former Limm property on Meany Road, the 138-acre former Erb farm on Sykesville Road and the 310-acre former Russell farm on Jacobstown-Arneytown Road.

The auctions will be held at 11 a.m. June 8, at the former Russell farm at 274 Jacobstown-Arneytown Road. Tours of the farms, where SADC staff will be available to answer questions, will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. for the former Limm farm, 10:45 a.m. for the former Erb farm and 12:30 p.m. for the former Russell farm.

Farmland is most commonly preserved through the sale of development rights, in which landowners retain ownership of the land but give up the right to develop it for anything other than agricultural uses.

Why Does eBay Want StumbleUpon? To Promote Its Auctions

At first it didn't quite make sense to me why eBay would want to acquire StumbleUpon. eBay does auctions and sales. StumbleUpon does random entertainment. At least, that's the way I used the two sites.

But then, of course, I remembered that StumbleUpon is basically just a huge database full of associated interests. It's kinda like Amazon. People who liked X also liked Y.

Deploy that technology on eBay, and suddenly your users find all sorts of stuff for sale they never knew about. I imagine somewhere inside eBay there's a chart showing that a huge percentage of their site is basically untrafficked. StumbleUpon, if deployed correctly, would help.

A plan to exclude competitive bidding

I see from the front-page article of March 23rd of Net News that a plan was devised to exclude competitive bidding from the largest building project ever undertaken by the Caymanian Islands Government.

If you only have one company submitting a price, which I have now come to understand has been accepted, in no way can that be construed as competitive.

Here again, the whole system of bids being considered by Government is brought into question. Further proof of Governments way of doing business as usual.

This certainly smacks of the tainted MC Restoration debris clean up and latterly Scrap Removal bids.

If you are building a house, you decide on the basic floor plan, layout, size and in conjunction with professionals like Architects, Engineers, Designers and other construction specialists you decide on the quality of the structure, elevations, finishes, etc.
