Tenn. town echoes questions on bids; How could ambulance service ...

For the second straight day, Professional Medical Transport's bid to provide ambulance service in a suburb drew questions on how it could be done for such a low price.

The Knoxville-based company, as it had in Collierville on Monday, was the low bidder for the ambulance contract in Germantown, saying they could provide the service for a base price of $613,179 annually.

That was almost half the price of the lowest among the other three companies submitting bids for Tuesday's opening in Germantown. And the rest of the vendors and some city officials are interested in the details of ProMed's bid to make sure the company can meet the demands outlined by the suburbs.

"I'm surprised at some of the bids; some of them came in a lot lower than I ever thought I would see for a small operation like this," said Glenn Miller of Rural/Metro.

Minot Park Board accepts bids for pool projects

The Minot Park Board voted unanimously Tuesday night to accept the bids for the Roosevelt Park and Oak Park pool projects after the costs were lowered a bit.

A clarification from the soil engineer indicated that excavation under the existing pool deck slabs at Roosevelt Park pool would not be necessary, resulting in a savings of $30,000. The concrete blocks used for the bath house were changed from burnished blocks to regular blocks, which saved $36,050. This brought the general contract down to $951,550. In the end, the combined total of all of the contracts was reduced by $89,689.

The replacement of the small barn in the childrens zoo at Roosevelt Park Zoo was also discussed. With the zoo opening in two weeks, zoo management felt the barn, which was destroyed by fire recently, needed to be replaced as quickly as possible.

Artists drive a hard bargain now

KOLKATA: Pricing of artworks has become a crucial factor in today's evolving Indian art market. Of late, one has been noticing a resistance, especially to paintings, at the highest levels. Even at the middle level, prices seem to be blowing out of proportion. Although, buyers still appear to be lapping up works at price points which are below the high-end prices. "Anyone buying art wonders about the functionaries who decide the price of the piece. The artists of the earlier times like the Tagores or Nandalal Bose used to gift their paintings because they were shy of mentioning a price for their works. Artist Kshitin Majumdar was taken aback when a painting of his was sold for Rs 5,000 by Chintamoni Kar to the Indian Museum. He was expecting a fraction of the price and needed the money for medical treatment.
