Auction sites bite back on touts

Internet auction sites have been criticised by concert promoters, who view them as enemy number one in the fight against ticket touts. Here two such sites - eBay and viagogo - defend their position.

The scene is familiar to music lovers up and down the land.

You hammer the telephone, open numerous windows on the internet, but you still fail to get your hands on a ticket for your favourite band.

Mammoth, meteorite or bezoar? Christie's offering all 3 in unusual ...

Christie's auction house in Paris, which usually sells fine art and furniture, is hosting an unusual auction of paleontological curiosities, including several prehistoric mammals.

Skeletons of a 10,000-year-old, four-metre-long rhinoceros and a two-metre-high cave bear are also going under the hammer. The skeletons are currently owned by a private collector but buyers may include museums or artists, said Christie's spokeswoman Capucine Milliot.

The auction is not to all paleontologists' liking. Pascal Tassy, professor at Paris's Natural History Museum, has decried the selling off of specimens that could be useful to science.

"It is a pernicious consequence of the Jurassic Park effect," he said.

"In the past, private collectors donated to museums, it was a great time of patronage.

Barrett, city try to hammer out deal on auction

SCOTTSDALE - Scottsdale and the Barrett-Jackson Auction Co. continue to negotiate an agreement to keep the collector-car event here, but the two sides disagree on the progress of those talks. Scottsdale City Manager Jan Dolan said Thursday that the two sides had a "very good" meeting last Friday, the first session since the City Council went behind closed doors in March to hammer out a negotiating strategy. Barrett-Jackson spokesman Jason Rose said Dolan's characterization of the closed-door meeting is inaccurate. .

Limited edition bear for auction

A Telford businessman has handed over one of the last limited edition teddy bears to be produced at his world famous factory to help raise hundreds of pounds for charity.

Oliver Holmes, who owns the historic Merrythought factory in Ironbridge, has handed over the grey teddy bear to staff at Wrekin College for their charity auction of promises and gifts to be held on Saturday.

The auction will raise cash for Medic Malawi to pay for the second phase of The Wrekin Orphan House in Malawi, Africa. A group of staff and students travelled to Malawi to build the first orphan house in 2005, after raising nearly £20,000.
