RHA auctions 'legal prostitutes'

After a two-month delay, students finally got to put up their hard-earned money for a hard-working man or woman at the Residential Housing Association's Date Auction.

After all, the auction was advertised on Facebook as "the closest thing to legal prostitution."

The auction took place April 10 in the University Center Sunnen Lounge. Emcee for the night, Dee Goines, a junior speech communications major, auctioned off 32 dates, not including himself. Junior Benny Roberts, a sociology major, made the highest bid of the night, $191.75, for his girlfriend, freshman Nadia Battle, a broadcast journalism major. Ironically, Roberts went for the smallest amount of money - one cent. Roberts and Goines said they wanted to show a reverse courtesy for Battle going for the highest bid.

To be filed under the rich getting richer: the current bidding war among book publishers over a memoir from retired tennis star Andre Agassi. Crains' New York Business Web site reported Friday that bids had reached $5.35 million. No doubt he needs it, and just the chapter on his romance with Brooke Shields will be worth it.

Slater council picks date for next McQueen day

Slater Mayor Stephen Allegri announced the Steve McQueen Day committee had chosen March 23 as the date for the next Steve McQueen Day celebration, during the council's regular meeting at Slater City Hall on Tuesday, April 17.

Allegri said that the event should become self-supporting financially.

"The city financed it one time," Allegri said. "Now we're looking at making it self-supporting. I think it's real important to point out no events would have taken place if the city hadn't put seed money in them. Now they are self-supporting."

In other business, re-elected council members Terry Jordan, Ron Monnig and Brownell Bryant were sworn in.

Bryant was then voted mayor pro tem of the council.

The council then discussed the open position for the unoccupied Ward 1 council seat.
