Upcoming auction benefits Affirmations, Mosaic Youth Theater

FERNDALE - Antique hunters will find vintage furniture, china, built-in architectural features at an auction being held this Saturday at Detroit's historic El Moore building. The building is being renovated by El Moore condominiums which are offering the items for auction. A portion of the proceeds will go to Affirmations and Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit. Period antiques from the 1870's-1920's will be offered.

Through a collaboration of El Moore Condominiums/The Alex Lofts on The Avenue, Affirmations and Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit, along with the support of Avalon International Breads and other area restaurants, the auction combines delicious food and rare antiques.

"Detroit is our home town. We were born and raised here and felt that we wanted to give back to the community that gave so much to us.

Local producer bids on city's historic theatres

Rising Toronto impresario Aubrey Dan wants to buy what he calls the "beautiful crown jewels" of the Ontario capital's theatrical venues, the 2,200-seat Canon and the 701-seat Panasonic.

Dan confirmed yesterday that his company, Dancap Productions, "is participating in the bidding process" for the two heritage theatres, both of which are located on Yonge Street in downtown Toronto and both of which were put up for sale by their current owner, Beverly Hills, Calif.-based Live Nation Inc.

"You need theatres to produce and to present, for sure," Dan said. "There's no question about that."

Live Nation, spun off in 2005 as the theatrical division of media giant Clear Channel, announced earlier this year that it was selling 13 theatres across North America, 11 of them in the United States, to concentrate on what it calls its "core business" of live music.

Virginia Tech student from Tequesta describes scene

Kelsey Hoffman, a junior at Virginia Tech, was headed to the academic athletic building Monday morning when police cars sped past with their sirens on.

"I really didn't think much of it," said Hoffman, whose parents live in Tequesta. "I just thought maybe someone was speeding or something. I was like, it's Blacksburg, nothing's going on."
