A Vote of Confidence: Annual fundraiser gives supporters a chance ...

Fierce winds whipped through the trees above the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art and dark clouds loomed overhead as I drove into its parking lot last Sunday.

The reason for my visit was to preview the works to be auctioned for SECCA's benefit at Friday's annual "Wild at Heart" auction. Also on my mind, though, was the center's impending change of status and what it might imply for its future.

Early this month officials representing the state of North Carolina agreed to take over SECCA, in response to an offer made by the center's board of directors a few months ago. The offer was evidently a last resort to deal with financial problems stemming from the need for millions of dollars worth of repairs to its sprawling building.

Although the state has agreed to the takeover, it won't magically solve SECCA's financial problems, aptly symbolized by those storm clouds looming overhead during my visit.
