| Sotheby's Auction of Islamic Art Beats the Pre-Sale Estimate
April 22 (Bloomberg) -- Sotheby's sold 4.6 million pounds ($8.8 million) of Islamic art, almost a quarter more than the pre-sale estimate. The most expensive item at the April 18 auction was an Ottoman silk, velvet and metal thread calligraphic band, which sold for 311,200 pounds, more than twice the initial estimate, Sotheby's said in e-mailed statement on the day of the sale. Increasing interest in Islamic, Arab and Indian art has prompted the world's largest auction houses, including Sotheby's, Christie's International and Bonhams, to set up offices in the Middle East. The rage of buyers at the April 18 auction reflected ``the global appeal of Islamic art,'' Edward Gibbs, head of Sotheby's Islamic and Indian Art department, said in the statement.

Kinetic Concepts responds to Medicare Bidding Rule
Kinetic Concepts, Inc. (NYSE:KCI), a global medical technology company with leadership positions in advanced wound care and therapeutic surfaces, issued a statement on the recently-released final competitive bidding rule by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"). The rule establishes Medicare competitive bidding procedures for durable medical equipment used in the home for ten designated metropolitan areas and includes the category of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy, including related accessories and supplies (collectively, "NPWT"), in the initial phase of competitive bidding, which is scheduled to take effect in April 2008. The Company estimates that V.A.C.(R) rentals and sales to Medicare beneficiaries in the ten designated metropolitan areas represented approximately $14 million or 1.7% of KCI's total U.S.
Parking lot paving bids taken
Parking your vehicle at the north end of Voigt Park will soon be a smoother experience, based on a plan to complete the paving on the east end of the lot there.
At its April meeting, the Board of Works opened quotes for a paving project at the park on the city's southwest side.
Plans call for the rolling and compacting of 42,320 square feet of the north lot, as well as the application of binder coat of paving this year, followed next year by a top finish coat of asphalt.
Quotes received as of the deadline on Monday came from Milestone Paving at $43,180, Central Paving with a quote for $32,200, and American Paving & Asphalt for $32,500.
"Actually, it's a little better than what I expected," said Monticello Parks Superintendent Mitch Billue of the quotes received.
Although the board took the quotes under advisement for review by Billue and street superintendent Doug Roberts, Billue said it's likely one that will be approved at a special Board of Public Works meeting at 5:45 p.m.
