Bandstand restaurant’s contents up for grabs

Dick Clark's American Bandstand in Overland Park permanently closed its doors April 14 after 17 years of burger flipping, dance parties and nostalgia.

The owners of the restaurant and dance club decided to call it quits because of slow business and financial concerns by the franchise company. Now everything from the giant records on the building's roof to the kitchen's many sinks must go.

The contents of the entire facility, 10975 Metcalf Ave., will be sold at a live auction Tuesday. Auction attendees may peruse the facility starting at 8 a.m., and the auction will begin at 10 a.m.

"We just need to go in there and sell everything we can possibly sell," said John Clark, the director of marketing for Auction Expo, a Texas-based company that will be hosting the auction.

Manheim Conference Call Part 3: Upstream, Midstream and Downstream ...

Consignors have been relying on auto auctions since the 1930s, so changing the mindset and the business practice of vehicle remarketing takes time. . . It's clear, however, that upstream remarketing is on the rise and quickly being adopted, based on its practicality and profitability.

- Julie Anders, vice president of strategy and delivery for Emercent Solutions, Vehicle Remarketing January/February 2004

Today I wanted to conclude my 3 part series that emerged as a result of Manheim's first quarter conference call. The first two parts focused on the new and used vehicle sales environments inspired by commentary Manheim's Chief Economist, Thomas Webb gave on the call. And part 3 focuses on this idea of upstream, midstream, and downstream remarketing.

You've heard me discuss for sometime the idea of the internet changing the auto retail environment.

eBid Doubles Successful Closings, Adds Videos to Online Auctions

Online auction website eBid said it has doubled the number of auctions that are closing successfully compared to November 2006. The auction marketplace has also unveiled a new design, stating it has "cleaned up the layout, simplified the navigation, improved search, and made it easier to find items you are looking to sell and want to buy."

eBid also added functionality for sellers to add videos to auctions when listing items. To add video to their auction listings, sellers upload video files to YouTube and add the unique 11 digit code that each new video is given into the box on the eBid listing page.

The online auction site said it has also made other, numerous improvements to the site. eBid is based in the UK. It launched in the US in 2005 and is available in Canada, Australia and Ireland.

EBay results bolstered by newer businesses

NEW YORK: EBay posted better-than-expected profit in the first quarter as several of its newer businesses compensated for disappointing results in its mainstay auction service.

The faster-growing units include shopping.com, a price comparison site; some classified listing sites; a service to let online merchants accept credit cards; and Skype, the online voice chat service.

"We are on track with our well-crafted portfolio," Meg Whitman, eBay's chief executive, said in an interview after the earnings report Wednesday.

The results sent eBay's stock up about 3 percent in after-hours trading.

Overall, the company earned $377 million in the first quarter, up 52 percent from a year earlier. Excluding charges related to stock-based compensation and some other items, the company earned 33 cents a share, above the 29 cents that analysts had predicted.
